I'm a 3L that came straight to law school from college. The last time that I was in a college classroom was way back in 2007, and we all took notes by hand. Yes, there was that one guy in every class that had a laptop, but everyone hated him and thought he was a tool. My point is that we all know how to take notes with a pen and paper, even the youngest among us did it really recently (unless you were the laptop-toting tool in class), and there's no reason we can't do it law school. As much as I love my gchat, there's just no legitimate reason to complain about this policy.

Laptop use might be the modern substitute for doodling, which research has shown to help a student pay attention. And yes, I do doodle and use my laptop in the conference room. http://tinyurl.com/dfmvjo

Haha, I wish I was in your class, even just to hear the whining from all the little babies whose daddy just took away their toy.

If you ban laptops during lectures, when are students supposed to find the time to comment on the ATL blog about the D.Marvin Jones litigation?

I'm surprised you didn't jump at the chance to take his case on retainer...$44mil. buys a lot of you-know-what in Overtown!

This is the bottom line: If students use laptops solely for taking notes, there no problem. The majority of students, however, use laptops to IM, chat, surf the web, play video games, etc. This is what causes all the distraction. Students can deny this but we all know it is true.

True story: In 2004, I was a 1L. I was sitting in class and we had an internet chatroom with over 50 students (from that class) participating. No one was paying attention. It was more entertaining to be in the chat room than it was to listen to the professor. I always regret this but it's true.
